SA: Leak prompts calls for uranium mine review
A leak from the recently approved Honeymoon uranium mine in northern South Australia
has prompted calls for a review of the mine's operations and full disclosure of trial
mine reports.
The leak, which contaminated groundwater, occurred about two years ago and has been
confirmed by mine operators Southern Cross Resources.
It came to light in a state government assessment report on the project released this
week, one week after the mine was given final South Australia and federal government approval.
A company spokesman says there is no guarantee against similar leaks in the future
but the environmental impact of such leaks would be minimal.
Australian Conservation Foundation nuclear campaigner DAVE SWEENEY says the ACF will
appeal to the South Australia's Ombudsman's Office to try to force Southern Cross to release
details of the trial mine operations.
