Fed: Almost a million people eligible for citizenship

SYDNEY, Aug 17 AAP - Almost a million people are eligible to become citizens of Australia,the Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs Gary Hardgrave said today.

In the lead-up to Australian Citizenship Day (September 17), Mr Hardgrave encouragedpeople to apply for citizenship.

"Although people can apply for Australian citizenship at any time, I encourage the900,000 eligible people to use the opportunity of Australian Citizenship Day to apply,"

Mr Hardgrave said.

Last year almost 4,000 people became Australian citizens on the day, and Mr Hardgravesaid councils played an important part in organising affirmation ceremonies.

"The Australian government acknowledges the substantial work of local government inthe conduct of these ceremonies and we thank them for their continuing contribution tothis important part of our citizenship activities," he said.
